Life is killing me

Wow. I had a bad day. I was hurting and for a while there I did not think I was going to live. As an American who has worked since the day I turned 16, and currently works full-time without health insurance of any kind, my wife and I got to spend a good chunk of the day attempting to make health vs. money decisions. Talk about attempting to hedge your bets.

May you and your loved ones never have to go through a decision tree like that. 😦

Should we go to urgent care? That’s $175 minimum. And what will they really do for me? Anything?

The emergency room? I was once there for about 20 minutes and came out owing $1,200. I saw a doctor for a grand total of two minutes and received a shot of something called dilaudid. Sure that stuff was great, I was instantly as high as a kite and didn’t have a care in the world. I was a giggly idiot within 15 minutes as my wife drove me home. But $1,200 for that? Wow. I’m in the wrong line of work.

I’m starting to wonder if I need a CAT scan of my head. I hear that those can cost $10,000.

In the end my wife basically left today’s decision up to me and, always the happy gambler, I decided to roll the dice and hope they didn’t come up snake eyes. Looks like I won this round. Something is still whack but I’m feeling better although not 100% my normal lucid self. It was a pretty painful and scary day.

To celebrate the fact that I’m still alive I just made myself a new YouTube video and would like to roll it out for you all now. Please enjoy this rousing rendition of Type O Negative’s “Life Is Killing Me.”

Oh, here’s a little quote from the back of the jewel case, too:

“If God were suddenly condemned to live the life which he has inflicted on men, he would kill himself.”
– Alexander Dumas (1802 – 1870)

* Bummer. The video was blocked. I can’t even have that bit of fun. Apparently they still allow this one but it contains a promo mid-way through the song.

Did WordPress fall through a cloud?

Something not worky at WordPress

The other day I did a little posting about The Great WordPress Outage of 2010. Those of us who lived through it will have something remarkable to tell our grandchildren about. Someday. I still haven’t found out who dumped a can of Mountain Dew on the fancy computer doohicky thingie. Someone must pay!

For now, however, the good folks at Minnov8 had a very interesting podcast about the hot new trend of “cloud computing” in the context of the big WordPress outage and what it means to rely on the cloud for our web sites and applications and a bunch of other fascinating stuff as well.

Click this link to go check it out: Minnov8 Gang 68: Falling Through the Cloud?

Oh yeah, they made me famous in their podcast, too. Shouts From The Abyss even gets mentioned for my stellar math skills. I’m famous! Go listen and check it out! The first few minutes is all about WordPress and my mention comes somewhere around 5:40 or so. If you’re into the techy thing even just a little bit and want to learn more about WordPress and other techy stuff, I urge you to give this podcast a listen! 🙂
